In order to undergo any alterations and additions to the existing house, it was imperative to meet the requirements of an individual heritage overlay provided by Hobsons Bay City Council.

To achieve the contemporary needs and desires of the client, we have created an airy, modern living space, which is highlighted beautifully by a raked ceiling that follows the line of the new skillion roof addition. The skillion form helps to capture northern light and is surrounded by garden. Cladded with corrugated metal, the modern edgy form is quite unique to Williamstown, however still successfully meets the strict requirements of council in relation to streetscape and siting. The use of corrugated metal was not only for aesthetic reasons, but to allow for a paint-free and maintenence free external cladding. The windows are double glazed and the water is collected and recycled on site, helping to achieve a high level of sustainability. Although the addition is very modern, it still harmonises with the existing heritage building. Furthermore, as we were working within a strict budget, we have designed it in such a way that there is potential for future major repairs to the original structure when and if required.
